Jeff Maldonato's Custom Scion tC at the 2011 SEMA ShowFriday - December 2, 2011 10:32 AM
2006 Scion tC at 2011 SEMA Show |
Jeff Maldonado wears a few different hats throughout the work week. If he is not at work at Toyota central in down town LA he is managing his clothing line, marketing company or helping out with charity events. When SEMA season comes around, Jeff switches gears again to custom builder. While he has worked on more than a few vehicles, present at SEMA, his Scion tC is the face of his company 742. His Scion has been to SEMA for the last 3 years with a different look and theme every time. Since 2006, Jeff has worked on perfecting his showmanship on vehicles to best represent the companies he show cases.
SEMA featured Jeff Maldonado's custom Scion tC |
Scion's have always been a car that owners strive to customize. Jeff went above and beyond this craze by totally hooking up this cars interior. With its fully wrapped, peanut butter colored suede and leather interior, this car stands out on the inside. As you move to the outside of the vehicle you get a complementary two tone paint job by basf custom on a v fiber complete wide body. The hood and the trunk of this vehicle go almost perfectly with the interior and is split up with the vivid color of the body.
Maldonado's Company Seven42 brought the 2006 Scion tC to SEMA |
The cool thing about Jeff's vehicle, is while it's a show vehicle at SEMA and spends most of the year covered up, you might see it gliding the streets of LA on the weekends. Under the hood of this vehicle you might find brands like Optima, K&N, jet performance and engine modifications from Mishimoto. Since the beginning of his tuning and custom building career there have been a few brands that Jeff has stuck with for performance and K&N is one of those brands. Since the start of his career Jeff has received over 100 awards, been featured in 3 magazines and been presented on TV and webcasts.
Maldonado has received over 100 awards for this SEMA featured Scion tC. |
Besides having fun and making tricked out custom cars, Jeff hopes to build his marketing company through his work and create a good platform to showcase manufacturers and vendors. With very unique color choices and his own personal style, Jeff plans to stick out from all the other custom builds out there.

Rebeca Olavarrieta Brings 2011 Jeep Wrangler and Roco 4x4's Nissan Xterra to SEMA ShowTuesday - December 6, 2011 10:56 AM
SEMA 2011 Jeep Wrangler owned by Rebeca Olavarrieta |
When Miami Florida comes up in conversation, people generally think of beaches, tall buildings, yachts, and Al Pacino, and not necessarily a custom 4x4 fabricator shop. Rebeca Olavarrieta will set this misconception straight at her 3000sq ft. playground / showroom, Roco 4x4, located right in the heart of Miami. Here, one can find some of the most extremely modified 4x4 vehicles that she and her team has made and worked on. Roco 4x4 is an international company that can be found in USA and throughout South America. Rebeca explains her passion of creating these off-road demons as unlocking the inner potential that 4X4 vehicles possess from the factory. "A 4x4 Jeep or SUV can conquer the terrain when the pavement ends but products like bumpers and winches take the experience to another level." Rebeca says. Recently she took two of these vehicles to the SEMA show in Las Vegas.
Roco 4x4's Nissan Xterra at the 2011 SEMA Show |
Her personal 2011 Jeep Wrangler and Roco 4x4's Nissan Xterra were taken across the nation to the SEMA show in Las Vegas. Since the Wrangler is her personal vehicle, Rebeca took it upon herself to do all the modifications alone. Rebeca said it took her over 10 hours just to weld on the long arm Teraflex suspension lift kit, which gives a taste of just how much work went into this vehicle. She said that the suspension modification was the hardest part of this customization. Being that the wrangler is her everyday car, this project gave Rebeca a great understanding of her vehicle and it is now an extremely tricked out daily driver, which is always a plus. Her jeep project ended up being a SEMA Contender Contest Award Winner in the 4x4 and SUV Category. Modifications on the Jeep included K&N Intake system, Front VPR 4x4 bumper with custom stinger, Or-Fab rock sliders, Bestop soft top, Or-Fab rear bumper with tire carrier, Teraflex Long Arm suspension, Fox Racing Shox, Pitbull tires, KMC Wheels. If you look closely and the brand names involved in this custom build, you will see a blend of functionality and beauty.
The Xterra she entered shows that looks are deceiving because even though it looks extremely modified it is a street legal vehicle (although that may not be hard to do in florida.) This vehicle is a Roco 4x4 shop vehicle and has been receiving custom fabricators attention for the past 3 years. Rebeca stated that " Nissan Xterras are usually associated with grocery getter SUV's. This tricked out Xterra has the original body and engine, but has been modified to compete in the most difficult terrains across the US." This is a serious piece of machinery which anyone could tell upon first glance. Some of the modifications include K&N Intake system, Front Dana60 Axle with Nitro Chromalloy shafts and ARB locker, Rear Dana60 Axle with Yukon Chromalloy Shaft and ARB locker, Calmini Transfer Case Gears, Roco4x4 Custom Internal and Exo cage and Front and Rear Bumper, Custom triangulated suspension and countless hours of blood sweat and tears. The Xterra receiving the following awards: Petersen's 4Wheel and Off Road October 2011 and November 2011 - Ultimate Adventure Coverage.
Rebeca's goal with these vehicles and many of the others that she works on is to link the gap between aftermarket products and custom fabrications. She accentuates the stock vehicles ability to go to remote places and reaches her goals with style in mind. Both the Jeep and Xterra follow this theme. She has been familiar with K&N for the last decade and shares its features and benefits with her customers. "I would like to thank K&N for supporting small businesses like Roco4x4. It is a mutual relationship." - Rebeca Olavarrieta

How to be a Christmas Gift Giving Hero - Think Inside the BoxWednesday - December 7, 2011 3:33 PM
Who says Christmas gifts have to fit into a shirt-box, or a stocking hung on the mantle? For the perfect gift that keeps on giving for the next million miles - think inside the box. By simply removing a vehicle's existing paper air filter, and slipping in a K&N lifetime replacement air filter, you can give a gift of enhanced performance. Every time the gift recipient gets their car's oil changed and is asked about buying another restrictive paper air filter they can think of you as they decline the offer because they have a K&N air filter that can go for up to 50,000 miles before servicing is needed and then they just service the filter and replace it.
K&N air filters are the gifts that keep giving for a million miles. |
Think it through, how much post present opening discussion gets fired up by another gym membership or a sweater with a neon art-deco motif? Yet, let that someone special in your life unwrap a bright shinny K&N box filled with their vehicle's air filter and they will be talking about it long after your Christmas tree is taken down; you will be their hero for years to come.

When you give K&N you illustrate a deeper understanding, not only for that individual, but for the special bond that exists between vehicles and their owners.
K&N air filters are designed to increase horsepower and acceleration. They can help a car or truck to run better so it can make driving fun again. Take a look at some of the feedback we get from K&N users. Some Kenworth T2000 and Peterbilt Class 8 Trucks have Money Saving Reusable Air Filter OptionThursday - December 1, 2011 10:22 AM
 K&N Heavy Duty Air Filter 38-2018S |
Over the years big rig truck owners have been driven to find ways to move loads more efficiently with less down time. That's part of what has made Kenworth's T2000 Class 8 trucks so popular. This big diesel truck was designed to have a low aerodynamic drag using advanced lightweight composite materials for fuel savings over other older models. Kenworth's focus on efficiency, low maintenance and quality has lead to the large number of T2000 diesel trucks on the road today.
In an effort to help diesel truck and RV owners be more efficient, K&N has released a new washable heavy duty air filter, part 38-2018S. This filter fits several class 8 trucks including some Kenworth T2000 and Peterbuilt Truck models. The 38-2018S filter is designed to increase horsepower while providing outstanding filtration. This washable and reusable air filter is manufactured from quality components and backed by K&N's Heavy Duty Air Filter 3-year/300,000 Mile Limited Warranty. The days of buying disposable air filters over and over just to throw them away are gone.
K&N's 38-2018S is a standard flow air filter, meaning the air flows from outside the air filter to the inside. It's low restriction filtering material does not require oil like most other K&N air filters. No oil equates to less time spent servicing the air filter.
The 38-2018S air filter is made with thick urethane seals, heavy duty wire mesh for structural support, and durable air filter material for long life. One awesome feature to this air filter is the handle on the top of the filter for easy installation and removal during cleanings. Cleaning is simple and fast with K&N's 99-0638 Synthetic Filter cleaning solution. You may also use a pressure washer and compressed air on their lowest settings. While the 38-2018S filter is known to fit on some Kenworth T2000 and Peterbuilt Trucks, the best way for diesel rig drivers and operators to find the right K&N air filter for their truck is to use K&N's Cross Reference Search with the existing air filter part number.
The 38-2018S is a cross reference to the disposable air filter parts listed below:
Baldwin RS3750 Air Filter FRAM CS9009 Air Filter Carquest 87455 Air Filter Luber-Finer LAF5873 Air Filter Donaldson P549644 Air Filter Napa 2455 Air Filter Fleetgaurd AF25598 Air Filter WIX 42455 Air Filter

2011 Ford Taurus SHO Owners Get Simple Bolt-On Horsepower with K&N Air Intake SystemFriday - December 2, 2011 9:47 AM
Dyno Chart for 69-3531TS intake system |
The story of the Ford Taurus could easily be mistaken for an action-filled Hollywood drama - a glimmer of hope breaking onto the scene and rising to infamy, which then wanes in the face of adversity and questions its identity before finding a renewed spirit and making a triumphant return. Ford brought the Ford Taurus to life in 1986 as a fuel efficient, comfortable and reliable sedan and it did just that, and more. It became an iconic American-made machine, but began losing ground in the 2000s to Japanese auto manufacturers; however, Ford has restored power, fuel efficiency, and style to the Taurus name with the new generation Taurus, and specifically the SHO trim level.
K&N 69-3531TS Air Intake System for the 2011 Ford Taurus SHO |
The new Ford Taurus SHO comes with all-wheel-drive standard and Ford's new twin-turbocharged 3.5L V6 EcoBoost motor. This power plant pumps out 365 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque while still delivering an impressive EPA estimated 25 mpg on the highway. And now, 2011 SHO owners can have even more horsepower and performance with K&N's 69-3531TS Typhoon performance intake system.
The 69-3531TS intake system is precision designed for the SHO Taurus and provides an estimated 12 horsepower boost with 13 pound-feet of torque at 5327 RPM. This system replaces the restrictive factory intake system with a streamlined aluminum intake tube and oversized K&N air filter for low restriction. It also comes with a heat shield to isolate the incoming air from the radiant heat of the engine.
The 69-3531TS intake system maintains all factory connections, does not require any modifications to factory programming, and is very easy to install. It will provide outstanding air filtration and great looks under the hood. The K&N air filter on the intake is washable and reusable, and the entire system is backed by K&N's Million Mile Limited Warranty.
The 2011 Taurus, one of the icons of the Ford Motor Company, has returned with a renewed spirit, and owners of the new Taurus SHO can transform their piece of history into legend with the 69-3531TS Typhoon performance intake system.

2010 and 2011 Toyota Tundra and Sequoia 4.6L V8 Owners Can Add Simple Power with K&NFriday - December 2, 2011 10:15 AM
 Toyota Tundra |
 Dyno Chart for 77-9035KP |
Toyota Motor Corporation initially made their mark in the automotive industry with smaller, highly fuel efficient and reliable compact vehicles, but the 21st century saw some new players on Toyota's roster with their rugged and powerful trucks and SUVs. Two of these popular new players include the Tundra and Sequoia.
The Toyota Tundra burst onto the scene in 2000 and took Motor Trend's Truck of the Year in its rookie season, defeating veterans of Detroit's Big Three. Just one year later in 2001, the Toyota Sequoia received a nomination for the North American Truck of the Year, again in its rookie season. The Tundra and Sequoia have continued to impress over the years with their powerful V8 engines, durability and overall reliability. Owners of 2010 and 2011 Toyota Tundra 4.6L and Toyota Sequoia 4.6L models can equip these seasoned professionals with even more power and performance with K&N's 77-9035KPperformance air intake system.
K&N Air Intake System for 2010-2011 4.6L Tundra and Sequoia |
K&N's 77-9035KP performance air intake system is precision engineered, specifically for these new Tundra and Sequoia models, and will make owners grin from ear to ear with an estimated gain of 10 horsepower and 11 pound-feet of torque at 5280 RPM. It replaces the restrictive factory intake system with a mandrel-bent aluminum tube and oversized K&N air filter. It comes with a heat shield to help maintain lower inlet air temperatures.
K&N engineered this performance air intake system to maintain all factory connections and work within the truck's factory engine programming parameters. This, simple to install, air intake system comes with a washable and reusable air filter and is backed by K&N's Million Mile Limited Warranty. It will provide outstanding air filtration and it can be used for up to 100,000 miles before air filter servicing is needed depending on driving conditions.
To the dismay of some (and to the joy of others) the pickup truck and SUV markets are no longer dominated by Detroit. Manufacturers like Toyota have brought all-star players to their lineup, such as the reliable and rugged Tundra and Sequoia. In any competition, great players need great gear, and 2010 and 2011 Tundra and Sequoia 4.6L V8 owners can help their all-stars shine with the K&N 77-9035KP performance intake system.

2006 Through 2011 Volvo 2.0L and 2.4L Diesels Get Performance with K&N Air FilterMonday - December 5, 2011 12:53 PM
Replacement Air Filter for select 2006-11 Volvo 2.0L and 2.4L diesels. |
Volvo is breaking the "big square family vehicle" mold with their sporty C30 three-door hatchback. Since its beginning the Volvo C30 has quickly become a favorite for car customizers the world over, with modified versions turning up at the Las Vegas SEMA show. Some have called the C30 as close to automotive art as this category gets.
The Volvo C30 has also been referred to as a "hot hatchback," and though it may not be as powerful as some other hot hatches on the market, it is one of the more sophisticated and refined models available. Several Volvo C30 models come with a 2.0 liter or 2.4 liter diesel engine. K&N designed an air filter for these engines that fits the 2006 through 2011 Volvo models listed below. These Volvo owners can add performance and save money simply by replacing the disposal OEM air filter with a K&N 33-2976replacement air filter. It's clearly one of the most straight forward and easy performance enhancements. This precision designed, drop-in air filter simply fits into your existing factory air box.

It, like all K&N performance air filters, is designed to increase horsepower and acceleration.
The 33-2976 replacement air filter is washable and reusable and has the capability to run up to 50,000 miles before servicing is required, depending on driving conditions. K&N also backs this filter with their industry-leading Million Mile Limited Warranty, making this the last air filter owners of Volvo vehicle models below will ever need.

2010, 2011, and 2012 Can-Am Spyders Get Performance with K&N Air FilterMonday - December 5, 2011 5:28 PM
Replacement Air Filter for 2010-2012 Can-Am Spyder Models |
Until 2008 there existed a nearly imperceptible niche between motorcycles and other four wheeled vehicles. For those seeking the open-air riding experience, yet not convinced on the merits of two wheels, along came a Spyder. And in slightly less than three years, the Can-Am Spyder roadster with its three-wheeled stance has become a global phenomenon.
Restriction Chart for CM-9910 Air Filter |
The Can-Am Spyder offers the kind of superb stability and handling two wheels can't, yet with all the benefits of an in-the-elements, wind-in-your-face, riding experience. With its distinctive Y-architecture - two wheels in front, one in back - the Can-Am Spyder roadster is a one-of-a-kind way to experience the freedom of the open road.
The steadiness of the three-wheel design is an automotive-derived BOSCH-engineered vehicle stability system (VSS) that integrates anti-lock brakes, traction control and stability control, providing riders with an exhilarating riding experience and an unmatched level of control and peace of mind.
The Spyder isn't just about stability though; its 990 V-Twin engine has riders aptly covered in the power department, and transmission options give riders a choice between manual and semi-automatic. Riders can now unleash even more performance from their 2010 through 2012 Spyder RT models by simply replacing the disposal OEM air filter with K&N's CM-9910 performance replacement air filter. It's one of the most straight forward and easy performance enhancements owners can perform. This precision engineered, drop-in panel air filter simply fits into the existing factory air box.
High quality products and the right balance of airflow, filtration efficiency, dirt capacity, and reliability are what K&N has represented worldwide since 1969. The K&N CM-9910 replacement air filter provides excellent filtration while also reducing restriction to increase engine performance, horsepower and acceleration.
Like all K&N replacement air filters, the CM-9910 air filter is washable and reusable and has the capability to run up to 50,000 miles before servicing is required, depending on driving conditions. K&N also backs this filter with their industry-leading Million Mile Limited Warranty, making this the last filter owners will ever need for their Can-Am Spyder RT bikes.
K&N CM-9910 fits the following:
2012 CAN-AM SPYDER RT 990 2011 CAN-AM SPYDER RT 998 2010 CAN-AM SPYDER RT 998

2011 Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.7L Owners Gain Estimated 17HP with K&N IntakeWednesday - December 7, 2011 9:37 AM
 K&N Air Intake Installed on a 2011 Durango 5.7L. |
Dyno Chart for the 63-1563 intake system. |
K&N has introduced the 63-1563 AirCharger® air intake system for 2011 Dodge Durango models with 5.7 liter engines and 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee models with 5.7 liter engines. Owners of these highly sought after mid-sized SUVs now have an easy way to add horsepower, torque, and acceleration. K&N has made the installation process very simple by using existing factory mounting holes and easy to follow installation instructionsthat include numerous pictures.
K&N Air Intake System for 2011 5.7L Dodge Durango models and Jeep Grand Cherokee Models. |
The 63-1563 intake system is designed to add horsepower and it all starts with K&N's high flow air filter technology. By eliminating the factory air box, K&N's engineers created enough room in the engine bay to install a large, tapered, washable and reusable cone air filter, part number RF-1041. The air filter has a large surface area for higher airflow rates and it helps increase horsepower by minimizing restriction. Another benefit of a filter with more surface area is a longer service interval between cleanings. In fact, this filter can go up to 100,000 miles before cleaning is needed, depending on driving conditions. When it is time to clean the air filter, it can simply be done using K&N's 99-5000 or 99-5050 Recharger® Kits. These kits comes with both the cleaning solution and air filter oil.
Next, K&N improved the airflow pathway from the air filter to the throttle body with a precision-molded intake tube. By utilizing a high-density polyethylene material, K&N's engineers were able to maximize airflow while not requiring any modifications to the engine's factory programming. There are ports on either side of the intake tube to maintain the factory connections- one for the factory IAT sensor and one for the crankcase vent line.
What all this engineering comes down to is sheer horsepower with outstanding engine protetcion. K&N dynamometer tests show an estimated horsepower gain of 17 horsepower at 4944RPM and an estimated increased torque of 15.45 pound feet at 4400RPM. Additionally this intake comes with K&N's industry leading Million Mile Limited Warranty, so drivers can rest assured they're protected.

 Toyota Tundra |
Dyno Chart for the 63-9035 intake system. |
The full size pickup market is a never ending battle when it comes to styling, powerful engines, and fuel economy. These characteristics determine which manufacture has the toughest, user friendly pickup. 2010 and 2011 Toyota Tundra models offer an ample amount of room concealed inside an aggressively styled exterior. Four engine options are available based on the designated packages offered. The latest engine to join the lineup is the 4.6 liter i-Force V8. It packs a punch with an estimated 310 horsepower; not to mention, it offers a not-too-shabby 15/20 estimated miles per gallon city/highway. Any truck lover can appreciate what Toyota has done here.
 K&N Air Intake System for 2010 and 2011 Tundra 4.6L V8s. |
For those that want the most out of their 2010 or 2011 Tundra with a 4.6 liter engine, K&N offers an air intake system that will allow for increased horsepower and acceleration. The system is an AirCharger® air intake system with part number 63-9035. The intake reduces restriction in the intake path by removing the restrictive factory air box, air filter and intake tubing and replaces them with K&N's smooth bore intake tube and a legendary K&N high flow air filter.
K&N dyno tests each and every intake system. The 63-9035 provided an estimated horsepower increase of 13 horsepower at 5517RPM, and an additional estimated 10.61 pound feet of torque to the wheels.
The K&N air filter provided in the kit is washable and reusable, and oversized for high flow rates and less restriction. It is made of a specially woven cotton media surrounded by a rigid wire mesh for structural integrity and durability. All of the components included in 63-9035 are so tough that K&N deems this intake worthy of their industry-leading Million Mile Limited Warranty. It will provide 2010 and 2011 Toyota Tundra 4.6L owners power and performance for a lifetime.
Part a href="http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?Prod=63-9035">63-9035 usually installs in 90 minutes or less using K&N's simple installation instructions and its air filter can be used for up to 100,000 miles before servicing is needed, depending on driving conditions.

Select Volvo VN and VNL Series Diesel Trucks Get Reusable, Washable Air Filter OptionWednesday - December 7, 2011 10:41 AM
Replacement air filter 38-2024S for select Heavy Duty Diesel applications |
K&N air filter 38-2024S is a heavy duty air filter made for a variety of diesel trucks. It fits some of Volvo's North American Truck VN and VNL series rigs. These trucks are built to be ultra aerodynamic for reduced gas costs, which has been a huge focus with the trucking industry. Volvo has also focused on cost and ease of maintainability as a selling point. That's where K&N's 38-2024S washable and reusable air filter can help owners even more. K&N commercial grade heavy duty air filters have a 3 year or 300,000 Mile Limited Warranty. This will save owners from buying paper air filters over and over just to throw them away.
Air filter number 38-2024S is an engineering marvel that is sure to impress even the most demanding drivers. This air filter features a radial seal that utilizes a rubber flange. This design seals the filter with precision to air inlet tubes that have an outside diameter of 7 7/8" inches. K&N's 38-2024S air filter has a top outside diameter of 12 3/4" inches and is constructed of a metal material protected by a highly durable black powder coat finish. In addition to a heavy duty finish the top features a handle that aids the installation and removal of the air filter for servicing. The air filters height of 16 5/16" inches is supported on both sides of the filtration media by a heavy duty wire screen.
One of the most fantastic features of this air filter is the filtration media. The media is comprised of a non-woven synthetic material that provides phenomenal filtration and engine protection, while at the same time giving heavy duty engines the air flow needed to do the job effectively and efficiently. The synthetic media is also directional. The S in part number 38-2024S stands for standard flow, this filter is designed for applications where air flows from the outside of the filter into the center of the filter, then through the mounting flange and into the engine.
This filter media is so durable that drivers can clean it with a pressure washer and dry it with compressed air on their lowest settings. Drivers will know when it is time to clean the filter by watching their air filter restriction gauge to see when it reaches 15" of water restriction, or by cleaning it once a year. To clean this air filter simply follow a few simple steps outlined in the heavy duty air filter cleaning instructions, utilizing K&N's Heavy Duty Filter Cleaner, part number 99-0638.
While this filter is known to fit some Volvo VN and VNL series diesel trucks, the best way to see if the 38-2024S air filter will fit your truck is to see if your old air filter is one of the air filters listed below, if it isn't use K&N's Cross Reference Search on KNFilters.com to find the correct heavy duty air filter.

Jimmy DeFrank Captures 2011 NHRA Div 7 Super Stock Title Along With Las Vegas VictoryThursday - December 1, 2011 7:45 AM
2011 NHRA LODRS Div 7 Super Stock Champion Jimmy DeFrank |
Some seasons, championships are won by pure domination and others by a driver or team's constant persistence throughout the year. The latter would be true for Jimmy DeFrank who was recently crowned as the 2011 NHRA LODRS Div 7 Super Stock Champion after what he refers to as somewhat of a struggle during the course of the year.
Jimmy DeFrank's NHRA Super Stock Chevy Cobalt |
DeFrank, who hails from Chatsworth, California, notes that he wishes the 2010 Cobalt that he competes with in SS/BS had been set up all season, as they had it for the final division event in Las Vegas. "During the season we kept changing things and trying to make performance improvements," he pointed out. "And we were struggling to try to win rounds and win races. For the last race in Vegas, we put the car back to a set up that we are familiar with, which is also a set up that we have won a national championship with in 2009 and the very first race out, going back to that set-up we won the event. We really learned our lesson there and that taught us a lot."
Over the season, DeFrank had several Super Stock final round appearances on both the national and divisional scene including the WinterNationals, the SportsNationals event in Fontana and during the spring division event in Las Vegas - all runner-up finishes and he was looking to finish the job before the season came to a close.
He is certainly no stranger to the championship podium. DeFrank currently owns three NHRA National Championships and with his latest accomplishment in 2011, he has now acquired a total of nine championships on the divisional level. "We were just so excited to win the championship," he said. "When you start racing, you just don't think about that stuff. When we look back now and think, 'Wow, that makes our ninth', it is pretty amazing."
In addition to his Super Stock ride, Jimmy also very successfully wheels a 1969 Chevy Camaro in Stock. "We didn't race that car very much during 2011, since we were really focusing primarily on Super Stock," he admitted. "But for all the more than we had it out, we had some good races and final rounds in that car, too. Next year we are going to try to race both classes on a fulltime basis."
Every racer has their own way of approaching each event, or one may call it their style of racing. DeFrank is no different and where he qualifies on the ladder is very important to him, no matter if it's in his Stock or Super Stock Car. "We run the cars fairly conservative and that helps with their consistency," he explained. "We take the same approach with both cars and we kind of try to choose the best spot on the ladder that we can, although everyone is so good. Each year racers get better and it keeps getting tougher."
For DeFrank's final divisional event of the season, not only did he want to take care of the rounds he needed to seal the championship, but he was also looking to grab his first race win of the season and with time quickly running out, the pressure was on. "It was such a big race for us," he said. "Going into that race, we hadn't won a race all season. We had just been straggling and got off our game. Going into that race in Vegas, we were second in the divisional points, with a chance to win the division. During the summer, when things were just not going well for us, we never really thought we would have a shot at it."
Just like his entire season, even for this event things weren't going to be easy. "It rained during one of the qualifiers," he noted. "So we only had one qualifier pass for the event and needless to say, our nerves were up a little bit. We got by first round on Saturday night and all of the competitors that all had a shot at the championship, all lost first round. That was such a great break for us, because now all we had to do was win second round to close the divisional championship."
DeFrank would have to wait until Sunday morning for second round and when he made it past DeCarlo and won the championship, emotions were running high. "There was such a ease and a peace about that," he confessed. "To struggle like we did and then still win the championship, we were just so thankful and excited and after that, it just really took the pressure off."
He may have had the championship in his back pocket, but he didn't want to go out winless for the season and had some heavy hitters to get through if he wanted to make that happen. "Third round, we had one of the best racers and fellow K&N racer, Dan Fletcher," he reflected. "We were happy to get by Dan, who is so good. Anytime you can get by Dan, it's kinda like winning a race. So that kind of set the tone for the rest of the race."
Even though they were racing in the desert, it actually became too cold to continue and the race was held over until Monday. "When we came back in the morning, we kept the car set up exactly the same as we had had it for our run with Dan," said DeFrank. "One by one we went through the rounds and won the race. It was just all so big for us and such a relief to win that race and everything."
"Vegas was such a confidence booster, we didn't want the season to end," he continued. "We just wanted to keep going and go right into the WinterNationals. That win and that championship felt like such a big comeback for us after the way our summer months went."
Both DeFrank's Stock and Super Stock cars utilize K&N air and oil filters and in addition to protecting his power plants with K&N, DeFrank is also very pleased with the K&N scoop on his Super Stock Cobalt. "My dad has always had the belief that you must use the absolute best-best quality products available , because by doing so, you have much better reliability and chance to win rounds and races. K&N is the very best in any product that they sell and not only just the products, the company as a whole is just awesome. Using the highest quality products is such a big part of being successful, it really does help you win races." And for Jimmy DeFrank, not just races but many more championships.

K&N's Jody Lang Caps Season with National Event Super Stock Wally & Stock Division TitleThursday - December 1, 2011 8:13 AM
NHRA Super Stock Win for Jody Lang |
2011 panned out to be another very exciting year for K&N's Jody Lang, who over the course of the season put together an incredible six NHRA National Event victories that were evenly split between his Stock and Super Stock entries. The final win for the Puyallup, Washington resident came in Super Stock during the 47th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals in Pomona, California. Along the way, Lang also collected the 2011 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Division 6 Stock Championship to add to his ever growing list of accolades.
Jody Lang during the 47th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals |
A pair of those NHRA National wins came at the same event when Lang doubled up in both his Stock category 1981 Malibu Wagon and in his Super Stock 1981 Malibu during the Seattle race. Although Lang had doubled up once before a few years prior in Las Vegas, he still revels in how big an accomplishment like that really is. "It's really crazy," he admitted. "I mean there are some races you don't go any rounds at all and to win both classes with that many people [friends and family] there is pretty incredible, actually to even think about."
Many racers who get the opportunity to go deep into rounds in two cars reflect how chaotic things become between rounds and Lang shares the sentiment. "When you have two cars going like that, it's kind of easy to get confused," he confessed. "Not as to which is which, but numbers and your dial-ins and stuff like that. You really have to take a moment and pay attention to putting the correct dial on the correct car."
While all the wins during 2011 were very important to Lang, it was the Seattle double that meant the most to him. "Seattle is my home track, so I have a lot more friends and family who attend or can attend that event than say a Pomona race," he explained. "So to be able to not only win one class, but both and share that experience with everyone was absolutely fantastic."
For the Pomona event, Lang was pleased at where he ended up on the qualifying ladder, especially in Super Stock. "I think a lot of times, where you end up and who you end up racing is very important," he said. "You know you are not going to make a perfect run, every run. I don't want to say it's destiny how you are qualified, but it's just how it works sometimes. You don't make a great run, but you are able to sneak by that round. Especially when you see ten other guys that round that would have been able to beat you that round, but you were the one that ended up winning. Like Alan Reinhart says, it's a right place, right time kind of a sport."
While he was ultimately happy with where he landed in qualifying, because he feels it put him on the right track to the win, he had been shooting for a particular spot and just wasn't able to make it happen. "Well I had been shooting for one of the quadrants, which I'm pretty sure, we had sixty-five cars and that means there is a single every round of the race," he said. "And my little quadrant didn't have one. So, not one bye to be had where I ended up, but obviously it worked out just fine for me not having a chance at any singles."
Where Lang didn't have any planned single runs for the Pomona event, he did get several lucky rounds when his competition went red. "There were three of the seven rounds where they went red," he said.
In addition to going rounds in his Super Stock entry, he was also doing well in early rounds of Stock. Sunday evening however, the situation got a little bit hairy. "I almost missed the round," he admitted of the third round of Stock Eliminator. "They said they were going to have a round of Super Gas in-between, but between all the traffic leaving and all the festivities for the pros, there wasn't enough time for Super Gas to get up there. So they call Stock and I'm up there running in the other class. I almost missed it and at least I was able to run it. I was within just a minute or two of missing out on the whole run, which would have been heartbreaking, even though I ended up just missing the tree with a .003 red."
With the early curfew at the Pomona facility, Lang would have to wait until Monday morning to finish the rounds in Super Stock. "I would have rather to have kept going and I think anybody who is still in like that would just want to keep going," he said. "I drive pretty good at night, but looking back I was actually getting pretty lucky there. So I guess the break helped me get my lights back to where they needed to be. That definitely helped me in the semi-final with my win over Jimmy DeFrank."
"I was a little tardy in the final, but I still wasn't late," he pointed out. "But, I guess I got away with that one because Abe [Loewen] left a little early there."
For the most part being the slower car and leaving first, Lang quickly saw his win light come on shortly after launching when Loewen turned it .008 red, and let her coast on across the stripe to take the final 2011 NHRA National Event Super Stock Victory and the special 60th Anniversary pewter Wally.
Both Lang's 1981 Malibu's did very well for him during the 2011 season and while he couldn't grab a win at Pomona in Stock, he had already secured his sixth division championship. His stellar season also included finishing number nine in the NHRA Super Stock national standings and a mere three points kept Lang from a national title in Stock, where he still landed at a very impressive number two in the country.
Lang's winning philosophy includes being very particular in his selection of the parts and products that he chooses to use on both of his championship Malibu cars. "It's all about consistency and reliability," he explained. "There are guys that buy used stuff and that might be OK for guys who run a couple of races a year, but if you really want to go up there and not worry about something breaking, you have got to start with the best you can get your hands on."
Some of those "best you can get your hands on" products for Lang come from K&N Engineering. "I absolutely love them," he expressed. "I started using the oil filters a few years ago and they are so easy to work with and take off. Same with the air filters, you don't have to worry about dust or small rocks getting into your motor, it just makes it really nice when you know you are protecting all the best parts you can get, with the best filters you can get and that's K&N."

K&N's Chip Rumis Comes Out On Top In NHRA's Fastest Sportsman Door Car ClassThursday - December 1, 2011 8:45 AM
2011 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Div 7 Top Sportsman Champion Chip Rumis |
The ever growing nationwide popularity of both the Top Sportsman and Top Dragster classes have converted many of today's best racers to join the fun of competing in the very quick qualified categories. Ramona, California's, Chip Rumis is fortunate enough to not only compete in both classes, but do very well in them. Thanks to two final rounds and numerous other round wins during the season, Rumis recently finished the season by being crowned the 2011 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Div 7 Top Sportsman Champion, as well as the highest point earner in Top Sportsman and number two in Top Dragster for a special program from K&N Engineering offered in Division 7, the K&N Top Qualifier Series.
Chip Rumis' Top Sportsman 2005 Jerry Bickel Chevy Cobalt |
While Rumis did very well in his 2011 Spitzer Top Dragster, grabbing a victory early in the season during the spring divisional event at Las Vegas where he nearly doubled up, also making it to the Top Sportsman final during the same race. It wouldn't be the only time he would visit the final at the Las Vegas facility. Rumis returned during the fall divisional event in his Top Sportsman entry and while he just missed the Wally, the Top Sportsman Championship was all his.
"Joe, my race partner called me and told me that I had led the Top Sportsman points [in division 7] all the way through the season," Rumis told with a smile. "I didn't really realize that, until he told me. I guess I kinda remember that, but I think I was like twenty-three or twenty-five points in front of the guy in second going into the last Vegas race. There were about four people who could have potentially caught me."
During the race, Rumis was not only trying to take care of business in his own rounds, but he was also paying very close attention to those other drivers that could take away his moment of glory. He got past LaFlam in round one and got a nice easy pass in round two when John Baker did not stage in time and was fouled out. But he would have to wait one more day, before he would learn his fate not only for the race, but for the championship when the race was called for the day as temperatures became too cold to continue any on-track activities.
When Monday and round three rolled around, Rumis took down Darryn O'Connor after putting together a much better reaction time and forcing O'Conner to take way too much stripe. At this point, he was now aware that three of his potential championship foes had been eliminated, only one remained and he would face him in the next round.
"I knew if I could take him [Richard Okerman] out, then the championship was mine," explained Rumis. "If he got by me, then he would have to go on to win the race to make it happen."
"The prize was the championship," he admitted. "As much as I love the K&N shootout and even winning the race itself, it was all immaterial compared to winning the championship. My frame of mind was that I was there to do business. I had worked very hard all year to get into this position and I just stayed focused."
Both drivers threw everything at each other but the kitchen sink, from killer reaction times to running dead-on their dial type numbers and when the dust settled at the stripe, the margin was a mere .0022 or seven inches. Chip Rumis has put together a .008 reaction time and a perfect 6.840 on his 6.84 dial and by doing so was the new NHRA Div 7 Top Sportsman Champion.
"It was pretty exciting not to have a bunch of blockers on my side of the fence and be able to take out the guy I needed to," he said. "That round was a pretty exciting one, it was very close. I was looking at him and back at the finish line. I kinda caught his light [driver winlight] and I didn't see it come on. I flipped back over to see if my light came on and you know, I'm throwing the parachute, running two-hundred and some miles-per-hour, trying to gather up the car. I don't see my light, I really just see a little flicker. So I get to the top [end] and I don't know who won."
"I kinda thought I won and I took my helmet off and walked up to shake his hand and he says congratulations to me," he continued. "At that point and time it was like wow, I really did it. Then getting the time slip and seeing the two-thou stripe. I have about thirty mile-per-hour on him and to see our numbers was just great, a run like that for the championship."
Rumis went on to make his second Top Sportsman divisional final of the season at Las Vegas in his 2005 Jerry Bickel Cobalt. "The rest of the day was kinda anticlimactic," he confessed. "The car spun a little in the final and I just wasn't going to be able to get there. But it was really OK, I won the championship."
"It was a very accomplished year," said Rumis, who runs both his cars with just the help of his wife, Jean. "I also finished number five in my Top Dragster. I am so blessed, I really couldn't ask for more."
With the Top Sportsman season finished, Rumis entered his car in a Comp Eliminator class for the NHRA National at Pomona, where he admits he had a lot of fun and has already been working with his engine builder, Steve Schmidt on a new combination to take on a few more Comp events in 2012.
"Winning this championship had a lot to do with all of the support that I have," he added. "K&N has just been awesome. Their scoops helped me pick up mile-per-hour and the new K&N scoop that I will be putting on for next year is expected to pick up even more and that's just huge to be able to pick up like that. I thank Schmidt for the fantastic motors and Jim Hughes on the tranny and converter combinations plus LAT Racing Oil in both my motors and transmissions. Of course, everything that I have is protected by K&N filters and I just wouldn't have it any other way. Nothing but the best if you hope to have a chance to win."

Elite Racing Lives Up to Their Name with a Second Consecutive Championship SeasonFriday - December 2, 2011 10:39 AM
 Elite Racing's #14 racecar. |
There are many difficult challenges in the everyday life of a successful race car driver. The ultimate challenge is figuring out how to win. Guys like Jason Meyers and the Elite Racing Team have managed to complete this challenge two years in a row with back to back World of Outlaw Championships. For Meyers, "The major challenge is always the fierce competition within the World of Outlaws. We are racing against some of the most talented and dedicated athletes in the world, and staying front of them is no easy task." With over 400 racers that ran their cars in 2011, competition can be quite fierce.
Consistency was the name of the game for the Elite race team. The 2011 season started off slow, but as the summer began to heat up, so did Meyers. During the month of July he managed to finish Top Five 11 times out of 14 races.
They managed to stay strong through the season and finish the year with 9 event wins, 41 Top Five finishes, and 56 Top Ten finishes. These numbers were proof that Meyers and his race team were determined to win another championship. "It seemed like we just couldn't breathe life into the season in the beginning, but we never gave up and we kept fighting the battle every day until we turned it around and ultimately we overcame our challenges and captured a second championship."
Driver Jason Meyers hoisting a 1st place trophy in Victory Lane. |
Some would question where the Elite race team gets their motivation and Meyers claims, "Motivation comes from within someone; it is that burning desire inside your soul that just makes you want to be better every day." To give an idea of what "comes from within" Jason Meyers, K&N got a chance to ask him some quick questions last week.
Do you have a specific routine before every race? I am pretty regimented in what I do before every race. There is nothing superstitious or anything like that, but I go through a series of events that I feel prepares me mentally and physically to perform at my highest level before every race. This includes everything from reading through notes to what I eat prior to a race.
What kind of preparations do you need to go through to ensure a championship next year? We have sat down and analyzed the last two seasons and find where we really shined and where we really struggled. We have identified those areas and are building systems to expand our strong points and better our weaknesses so that we will be an even better team in 2012. We know very well that just being as good as we were in 2011 will not be good enough, we have to be better.
My family is very involved in our race team. We have a really neat family atmosphere that is great to be around. |
What kind of role does family play at the race track? My family is very involved in our race team. My wife does everything from running our vending trailer to dealing with me and the storm that I create with the numerous tasks that I take on day to day. Oh and did I mention that she does all of this while raising two beautiful girls? She is incredible. All of our team members' spouses are involved and around the team quite often. We have a really neat family atmosphere that is great to be around.
Is Charolette Motor Speedway a track favorite? We have had a lot of success over the past few seasons at Charlotte and that just naturally makes it a favorite. The events in Charlotte are some of the diamonds of the schedule, and it is really something to race in front of those kinds of crowds.
Would you say K&N products give you an edge over the competition on the track? We choose our parts that we utilize very carefully and accept nothing less than the best when it comes to performance. Our K&N products have been a part of our program for over 15 years now and I wouldn't use anything else, unless there was something better that is, and there just isn't anything better than K&N products.
Make sure to keep an eye out for the Elite Race Team during the 2012 World of Outlaws race season as they go for a third consecutive championship.

ATRacing Dominates ProBaja Southern Baja Off Road SeriesFriday - December 2, 2011 10:45 AM
 The ATR Racing Crew |
One look at the ATRacing website and it is instantly apparent, Andrea Tomba and his crew have figured out desert racing. 2011 might have been the most successful season yet for the team that dominates the ProBaja Southern Baja Off Road Championship series every year.
The ATRacing Team Driving Through the Silt |
Tomba drove his Ford F-150 and Ford Explorer to his third straight ProBaja Class 8 Open Championship, collecting 3 wins and 2 seconds in the six-event season. Teamates Randy Sanders and Chad Faulkner competed in just four of the six races due to work constraints, yet placed 4th in the final ProBaja Class 6 points standings, collecting 2 wins and 1 second place finish. Finally a pair of rookies, Rory King and Daniel Hernandez drove their Ford Ranger 4x4 to 9th place in the 28 truck ProBaja Class 7 Open Championship.
"ProBaja has proved that it offers the best attended races, both for the number and quality of participants, as well as spectators," Tomba said. "(Three championships in a row) feels absolutely incredible, and somewhat tough to believe, because it really was like a movie finish."
After completing a perfect 2009 season (6 wins in 6 races) and winning 5 races with 1 runner-up in 2010, Tomba had to battle through adversity to complete the three-peat.
 The ATRacing Team Vehicles |
Tomba raced out to an early lead in the points standings, but a DNF brought on by a transmission failure caused Tomba to fall back. Entering the final race of 2011, Tomba needed to win and points leader Ricky Betancourt had to finish at least fifth. Betancourt was caught in a turn 1 accident that caused a flat tire, relegating him to an unlikely 8th place finish, while Tomba raced out to the early lead and dominated the event.
"It makes it that much sweeter, and I really can't think of a better way to show our appreciation for all the great work the crew and team did the entire season."
This season, the ProBaja Southern Baja Off Road Championship say more than 440 teams enter an event. The series runs four desert style Baja races, and two Short Course events, putting more emphasis on driver technique and versatility. More than 100,000 fans attended each of the four desert Baja races.
Tomba and his team are already working on their race lineup for 2012. The ATRacing stable is working to eliminate the mechanical bugs that hindered King and Hernandez's season while also preparing for a run at Class 8 championship number four. But when asked whether or not the offseason can end quick enough, Tomba offered a candid response.
"Funny, I think I have to answer yes and no! On one hand, we can't wait for the new season to start, to see what the competition is going to bring out, and it always adds a little extra pressure when you're the one everyone wants to beat.
"On the other hand, 2012 was the first year that we ran three trucks, and these months 'off' before the season starts again are definitely welcomed, as we need to step back a little and draw up all the plans for next season.
"And it's even more exciting when you consider the 45th SCORE Baja 1000 will finish in our home territory, so we are already looking at opportunities to either race one of our trucks, or drive for someone looking for a driver with plenty of Southern Baja pre-running and racing experience."
Tomba offered high praise for K&N and it's full line of products and their ability to hold up even in tough desert conditions.
"We have been working with K&N Racing for over a decade. It really feels like a marriage. K&N have shown us that they are always striving to improve their products or find us new products to combat the number one enemy in off road racing, dust!
"It is an honor for us to have the opportunity to run and test these products, which have always proven to be unbeatable. Some things never change, and the incredible level of service and attention that K&N have always shown us, going out of their way to make things happen, has always remained the same. For us, K&N is like family and are in integral part of ATRacing, and I couldn't imagine racing without them or their products. I am most grateful for their support and friendship."

Curt Michael Wins United Racing Company's Sprint Car Championship for the Seventh TimeFriday - December 2, 2011 1:35 PM
Curt Michael clinched to United Racing Company's Sprint Car championship for the seventh time in eight years. |
With the 2011 360 Sprint Car season wrapped up in the northeast, Curt Michael and his team finally have time to sit down and breathe. That's because for the seventh time in eight years, Michael clinched to United Racing Company's Sprint Car championship. Michael and his team, the only team to ever win five championships in a row (2004-2008), dealt with their most difficult season yet, overcoming mechanical gremlins to rally late in the season and capture his unprecedented eighth URC championship.
Curt Michael and his team won five championships in a row from 2004 to 2008. |
"As a team we did a great job rallying through those (mechanical) problems and still won the championship," Michael told K&N News. "Overall we had a good season, not as good as some of my other championships, but in the end it worked out."
Michael credited his brother Sean and Bill Gallagher for providing him with top-quality equipment. But the team had a scare at a race in Bridgeport, New Jersey when while running in second place, the motor broke. From that point on the team had to play catch-up, but a strong end to the season sealed the deal.
2011 will go down in the record books as the final URC season for Michael and his team. After over a decade of URC competition, they will look to run a wider variety of races, including a jump into the bigger 410 c.i. powered sprints.
"We are setting some new goals for next season and aren't going to run for a points title. We as a team just want to do something different."
The team is already hard at work preparing for 2012. Michael said that with the holiday's taking time away from the shop, there really is no offseason anymore. Racing begins in February at Lincoln Speedway, and the team is also planning on more races at the famed Williams Grove Speedway.
Curt and the team thanked K&N for their years of support.
"K&N has great products that have helped us win so many championships. When we take our motors in to be rebuilt at Riders Racing Engines, they always say we have the cleanest motors thanks to our great K&N Carbon Fiber Air Box and the K&N Air Filter Oil we use."

Stronghold Motorsports Led by Jeremy McGrath Claim 3 LOORRS Podiums in VegasFriday - December 2, 2011 1:42 PM
For McGrath the definitive poster-boy of Supercross, getting his first Pro 2 win of 2011 was particularly sweet. |
Whatever degree of chill the cool desert air cast upon fans braving rounds 13 and 14 of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, the heated action on the track quickly dispelled. Stronghold Motorsports led by seven-time Supercross champion, Jeremy McGrath's wire-to-wire Pro 2 win, highlighted the weekend of racing for the team, which included three podiums when the final checkered waved. K&N News spoke with Stronghold Motorsports Managing Partner, Scott Bailey to get his take on how things went and how 2011 is unfolding for the team overall.
Jeremy McGrath is getting familiar with the LOORRS tracks and his new truck, and he proved it by winning flag-to-flag in round 13 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. |
You covered every tier of the podium, what was the overall team consensus after the weekend, and how are you currently positioned for championship points with only one points earning round remaining? "We have had some successes in the Pro 2 category including Rob Naughton and Jeremy taking first and second place on the podium in two separate rounds. Between them, we have captured a total of 10 podiums in 14 Rounds; four of those being wins. In short course racing, there is a great deal of contact on the racetrack, and that can take its toll on challenging for the championship. The racing is a 20-lap off road slugfest and even when you do your best to stay out of trouble, sometimes, it finds you. Right now, Jeremy and Rob are sitting in fourth and fifth place in a very deep field. Cameron Steele has been very impressive in his first season behind the wheel of the ProLite and he is sitting in third in the points chase. With one more points earning round left in the championship, we are headed to Firebird Raceway looking for a solid finish."
Stronghold Motorsports' Brandon Bailey will be racing his Pro Buggy in the upcoming Lucas Oil Challenge Cup at Firebird Raceway. |
Jeremy got his first win in a big way, what's his take on winning in such a convincing manner, and is it safe to assume he's got his truck dialed in? "We were in a great position to start on the pole with the No. 2 and Jeremy capitalized on that by running a flawless race from flag-to-flag. He shot off like a rocket and never looked back. It was a great race and a wonderful victory for the entire team. He has said that he likes the Vegas track and has always been fast there. He put it all together for that race. At the beginning of the season, Dave Clark, Jimmy Davidson and the crew built a brand new truck in house for Jeremy with a Roush power plant. Of course, it has taken some time for him to get comfortable in the truck, while at the same time Jeremy was seeing some of these tracks for the first time. But throughout the season, both he and Rob have been among the frontrunners, and we've had some great results."
K&N sponsored Rob Naughton has three wins and five total podiums for 2011 so far. |
Rob Naughton proves that LOORRS racers are indeed ironmen. |
Rob Naughton had another strong showing, what's his perspective on round 14? "In just his second season, Rob has entrenched himself among the elite in the Pro 2 class. He has driven some very strong races and has developed into a very clean driver. When he's in his zone, he hits his marks, and is very consistent. He came out with a win early in the season and he has since backed that up with two more wins and five trips to the podium. He continues to develop as a driver and his second place in Round 14 is a reflection of the hard work put in by both Rob and his crew chief, Nick Griner."
With a very impressive first season racing Pro Lites Cameron Steele currently holds third place for series points. |
How is the team's confidence with the momentum they've gathered heading into Firebird Raceway? "We are looking forward to an exciting weekend at Firebird to end the season strong. Along with the last round of racing, we're going to be contending for the Lucas Oil Challenge Cup. Rob and Jeremy will be going up against the Pro 2 (2wd 900HP) and Pro4 ( 4wd 900 HP) field, while Brandon Bailey (Pro Buggy) and Cameron Steele (Pro Lites) will be squaring off with the Pro Lites and Pro Buggy classes on the same track. Stronghold Motorsports has done very well in these winner take all cup races in the past and we believe that we will have a strong showing in December."

Peter Biondo Earns Super Stock Victory In Round Seven of NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing SeriesFriday - December 2, 2011 1:54 PM
2011 NHRA National Championship Peter Biondo |
Peter Biondo recently experienced a great day of drag racing at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, at Las Vega Nevada. Biondo and his Pontiac Firebird had led in the Super Stock class throughout practically the entire season, but the driver didn't have the luxury of entering the NHRA competition in front of the pack, as fellow drag racer, Jackie Alley had recently taken over the lead. In fact, as the season's end neared, there was no way that Biondo could reestablish the first place position in the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series during the 2011 season.
Peter Biondo and his 2000 Pontiac Firebird led the Super Stock class most of the entire season. |
A recent drop in the standings didn't seem to deter the driver's determination to win in round seven though, as he walked away the victor at this particular event. Lining up in his 2000 Pontiac Firebird, powered by a 428 true Pontiac engine, Biondo raced with confidence on his side. "I felt very confident based on how I was driving and how the car was performing," recalled the driver. "Also, I was racing against Jackie Alley, who had just passed me in the national standings, so I had a strong inner determination to win."
Anyone following drag racing knows that it is a sport in which the winner is often determined by mere fractions of a second. In turn, there are many variables that must be considered by the driver and his or her team. Referring to the Las Vegas motor Speedway, Peter Biondo explained, "I really enjoy racing in Vegas. It is easy to 'dial in' there, because the humidity stays low." When asked the key to his success at this particular event, he suggested that discipline and focus were both key elements, and making the correct decisions at the finish line was essential.
As one might suspect, after leading in the national standings for a majority of the 2011 season, and eventually losing it to Alley, the fact that he was victorious over her during round seven made the win even a little sweeter. "Yes it did," recalled Biondo. "I felt a little down and out after losing the lead that I had worked so hard all year for. The victory help lift me back up for sure. I cannot pass Jackie.. She has it locked up. I am hoping to hang on to the Super Gas lead, and I need to try and get on the same side of the ladder as my competitor, Mike Sawyer, to keep my destiny in my hands."
Biondo is acutely aware that his success throughout the remainder of 2011 will depend a great deal upon his ability to focus and experience his best driving and limit his mistakes when the pressure is on. When asked the key to success throughout the remainder of 2011 and into the 2012 season, the driver said, "Keep doing what I know how to do, and keep driving errors to a minimum. It's not always who drives the best; it's who goes through seven rounds without making any driving errors, and who makes the better decisions."
Peter Biondo is also quick to say that the support of his team is of importance. "My grandmother told me when I was eight years old, "Who you surround yourself with is who you are". I am fortunate to have great people around me starting with my girlfriend, Emily, to my partners, Anthony and Phillip and family."
Biondo is also a strong believer of properly maintaining his race cars. In fact, for the past ten years, the driver has depended on K&N products to keep his engines contaminant-free and well-lubed. "I use the K&N air filter, air scoop in the Super Gas car, oil filters and racing glue." When asked if K&N products have played a role in his success, he explained, "Yes. Their air filter and scoop clean the air flow, which makes the car faster and more dialable and predictable. The oil filter without the nut on it makes for easy and quick oil changes between rounds."
As the 2011 season nears its end, Peter Biondo will soon begin preparing for the upcoming year. "I will sit down and take each part of my program and see what weaknesses I have and what needs improvement, from the car, to the people I am involved with, to my driving." Referring to what he enjoys most about the sport, Biondo continued, "I enjoy the competitiveness, and the numbers and logic that are involved behind the scenes."
Referring to his sponsors and fans, in closing, Peter Biondo continued, "Thanks for all of the support and for rooting me on all year. Hopefully, by the time you read this, I will be wearing a 2011 National Championship ring!"

Team Faith Wins Second Grand National Cross Country UTV Lites ChampionshipTuesday - December 6, 2011 10:57 AM
The championship winning Yamaha Rhino has been retired by Team Faith, as they will be racing in the Premier Open Class for 2012. |
"For us, winning a championship in anything is awesome! It gives us an opportunity to share the message of Jesus Christ with others and it helps put our sponsors in the spotlight as well, which in-turn helps fuel our race program," remarked Team Faith owner Brian O'Rourke. Since 1994, Team Faith has functioned as a non-profit multi-faceted Outreach Ministry, impacting people who are enthusiastic about Action Sports.
Team Faith's Chuck Lemaster and co-pilot Brian O'Rourke locked up their second GNCC UTV Lites Championship in round five of six at St. Clairesville, Ohio race. |
Team Faith's Chuck Lemaster along with co-pilot O'Rourke were crowned the Can-Am Grand National Cross Country UTV Lites Champions last week. The team's third place finish in the round five event at St. Clairesville, Ohio, was enough to secure their second UTV Championship.
Founded in 1979, the GNCC series continues to be considered America's premier off-road racing series. Cross-country racing is arguably one of the most physically demanding of all motorsports, and the grueling three-hour GNCC races support that claim. This year alone, some events have featured as many as 1,500 riders, navigating through tracks ranging in length from eight to 12 miles, with varied terrain, including hills, woods, mud, dirt, rocks and motocross sections. It has been said that GNCC events are tests of both survival and speed.
After locking up the 2011GNCC title O'Rourke told K&N News, "We have officially retired our Yamaha Rhino and have not raced it since we won the Championship. Instead our efforts have been focused on our current National Arenacross team with Kelly Smith and Kevin Johnson." It appears the second UTV Lites title will be the last for the championship winning Rhino as O'Rourke has put it up for sale.
"All year long at each event, I know we were looking ahead and dreaming a little about trying to race in the Premier Open Class in 2012," said O'Rourke. "That's where the machines really perform. Besides the economic issues, I think that is why the attendance in our class was a little low as well. Everyone wants to race the premier class to see just how good they really are. So, although a second Lites title is great, we think it's time we compete in the open class."
"Driving-wise, I believe Chuck Lemaster is completely competent and more than ready to race in the open class! Like I said earlier, all this season we've both been drooling over what the open machines can do out on the track. The big challenge is the cost," adds O'Rourke. "We are working on a deal that we hope will get us the machine we need to compete, and if sponsors like FLY Racing, K&N and Trinity Racing help us build our race package, there's really no reason that we couldn't transfer the last three seasons of experience racing Lites UTV's on the GNCC series into a winning open class program as well."
"Chuck Lemaster and I want to say thank you to K&N for all your support! We appreciate you guys working so hard to find solutions to our performance needs. Congratulations to you as well for another UTV Lites Championship. We look forward to continuing to grow this race program into hopefully a Premier Open Class contender."

Dan Neve's 2010 Mustang Shelby GT500 leads Fall Cruise for a Cause in Wisconsin DellsTuesday - December 6, 2011 11:05 AM
The 2010 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 and Neve have been leading the Fall Cruise for a Causein the Dells for the past two years. |
Cars deliver us, they race and co-star in movies to entertain us. We customize them, use them to make statements regarding who we are. They create jobs and adolescent memories, and in a pinch they'll shelter us. But some are called upon to serve an even higher purpose still, like drawing attention to a cause that leads to a cure. Dan Neve and his 2010 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 have answered that calling.
Neve contacted Fords Warriors in Pink program to get permission to use their logo and support has been growing ever since. |
"In January of 2010, when my wife and I received the call that she had breast cancer, I felt like I needed to do more than be the guy holding her hand," explained Neve. "My mother was diagnosed late in 2009, so now with two women in my life afflicted with this disease, I had to help."
During the week Neve is the Operations Manager for Staab Construction Corporation, weekends and vacations though he becomes a road-warrior in his Shelby GT, raising attention and money to help find a cure for breast cancer. "For the past two years I have used my vacation and most of my weekends getting to car events and in front of people with the car," Neve told K&N News. I work in the construction industry and of course summer is car show season, so at times it seems like I have two fulltime jobs. The car is never on a trailer because that kind of defeats the point of using it to get attention. Whether at a gas station in my hometown, or away traveling to Tulsa, Oklahoma, for the Mid America Ford Nationals, people will come over and talk and say thanks."
Neve and the women that motivate him. |
As a member of the Wisconsin SVTOA (Special Vehicle Team Owners Association), Neve decided to create a joint event with the Twin Cities chapter of Minnesota in Wisconsin Dells. "That was eight years ago and I have been organizing the event ever since," he says. "But when I started my efforts in this fight I changed the name to Fall Cruise for a Cause in the Dells. The last two years we have been fortunate to have some prominent guest speakers. Last year we had John Clor (Ford Performance) and retired Green Bay Packer, Leroy Butler. This year we were honored with Kenny Brown at the event. The weekend consists of a Friday night get-together, a Saturday morning 60 to 70 mile cruise through the scenic back roads. Then there's an afternoon miniature golf tournament with an evening banquet, with the guest speakers, along with prizes and awards. Each year it has grown and hopefully that it continues."
In just two years of part-time traveling Neve has already raised nearly $24,000 for the Susan G Komen charity. |
At first the Shelby drew enough attention on its own, but Neve says he also wanted to grab the attention of those people that weren't car enthusiasts by adding pink. So he contacted Fords Warriors in Pink program to get permission to use their logo. Neve explains, "I knew that I would take the car to shows and events, so I began to contact businesses for their support in this fight and for financial donations, and then I added their logo to the car and it of course it turned pink. With pink added to the car my first big event was the 2010 SVT Superfest at Virgina International Raceway. With the support of SVTOA and Ford we offered charity rides on track with Ford drivers and all donations went to the Susan G Komen charity."
Neve and his car have covered over 20,000 miles in the first two years on their mission to fight and save as many lives as possible. "When Ford announced that they would like me to display the car at the 2010 SEMA I jumped at the chance. That is when vendors like K&N offered to support the car in product. K&N has also provided gift certificates for those buying raffle tickets as possible prizes to win. All the money raised with the sale of the raffle tickets was donated and it made a huge difference. Car enthusiasts are a special group of people and care for others a lot."
Raffling prizes is another means for Neve to raise money for his cause. |
Neve has raised nearly $24,000 and he estimates that hundreds of thousands of have seen his pink trimmed, logo adorned Shelby.
"Having those who have been personally impacted by not only breast cancer, but many other forms of cancer, come up to me and shake my hand and give me a hug for doing what I'm doing is incredible," adds Neve. "I tell people that I grew up knowing someone with polio, and today I don't know of one person with that disease and my dream is for my grandson to say the same thing about cancer when he grows up. What a great day that will be! Now that we have just finished year two of the Cruise for a Cause, and now with the addition of my mother-in-law as the newest women in my family to be diagnosed, this ride is not over and will go on as long as I can make a difference for others and find support."
Neve says he's looking forward to more road trips and making an even greater impact in 2012. "I want to make a difference and travel is not cheap and all the money I raise is donated. So with the cost of fuel, tires, maintenance and food and lodging, well it all adds up. I'm hoping by getting the word out other companies will jump on board so this journey can continue."
